About the project:

The Milltown development has transformed the former Volcrepe Works site in Glossop into a collection of high-quality boutique homes, delivering nine contemporary two-bedroom apartments, six of which offer spacious duplex accommodation.

Located in the heart of the Peak District and within easy reach of Glossop town centre, the development has been designed with sustainability in mind. Each property incorporates modern energy-efficient technologies, including air source heat pumps, helping to reduce energy consumption while creating comfortable homes for future residents.

Our role in the Milltown project:

Here at Enviroply Roofing, we installed Protan roofing systems across both apartment blocks, delivering a complete mechanically fixed single-ply roofing solution designed to provide long-term weather protection, thermal efficiency and reliable waterproofing performance. To achieve this, we used a proven Protan roofing system that combines high-performance insulation with durable PVC waterproofing, ensuring the completed roofs meet all of the requirements.

Air and Vapour Control Layer

For both of the roof areas, we installed a Protan Polyethylene Vapour Control Membrane, directly above the structural deck. This is designed to provide an effective barrier against moisture movement within the roof construction.

The membrane was carefully laid with sealed laps, penetrations and perimeter details to maintain continuity throughout the roof build-up. By preventing warm, moisture-laden air from entering the insulation layer, the vapour control membrane helps reduce the risk of interstitial condensation while protecting the long-term performance of both the insulation and roof structure.

Insulation

To achieve the required thermal performance, Kingspan by Protan Thermaroof TR26 PIR insulation was installed throughout both roofing blocks.

These rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation boards were selected for their excellent thermal efficiency, lightweight construction and long-term dimensional stability. Installed in accordance with the project specification, the insulation created a stable substrate for the waterproofing membrane whilst helping to reduce heat loss and improve the overall energy performance of the completed homes.

Waterproof Membrane

Both apartment blocks were waterproofed using Protan SE in Dark Grey, a reinforced PVC single-ply membrane specifically designed for mechanically fixed roofing systems.

Mechanically fixed in accordance with Protan’s specification, the membrane features a textured, slip-resistant finish and provides outstanding resistance to UV exposure, weathering and thermal movement. Its proven durability and flexibility made it an ideal solution for this residential development.

All membrane laps and junctions were completed using Protan’s hot-air welding process, creating homogeneous welded seams that form a fully sealed, weatherproof roofing system capable of delivering reliable long-term performance with minimal maintenance.

Detailing

Careful attention was given to every aspect of the roof detailing to ensure a high-quality, weatherproof finish across both apartment blocks.

Perimeter edges, upstands and roof penetrations were completed using compatible Protan laminated metal trims and prefabricated detailing components, providing durable protection at all critical junctions. Rainwater drainage was integrated using Protan ProJual rainwater outlets, ensuring efficient water management while maintaining the integrity of the waterproofing system.

Where services penetrated the roof, prefabricated Protan pipe collars were hot-air welded to the membrane to create robust watertight seals. All detailing was completed in accordance with Protan’s technical specification, ensuring every junction contributes to the long-term durability and performance of the completed roofing system.

Quality and Compliance

All roofing works were completed in accordance with Protan’s technical specification and current UK roofing standards using approved installation methods.

Upon completion, the roofing installation was covered by a 20-Year Protan Single Point Guarantee, providing Watson Homes with confidence that both the specified materials and workmanship meet Protan’s recognised performance standards.

The completed roofing systems deliver durable, energy-efficient and low-maintenance protection, supporting the long-term performance of this residential development while complementing the sustainable design of the new homes.
