About the project:
A new four-storey Engineering Block is being constructed at Riverside College’s Kingsway campus in Widnes. This standalone building will accommodate specialist engineering workshops alongside modern teaching spaces. The wider development also includes re-cladding existing campus buildings and creating additional facilities, such as a dedicated music hub and a new teaching block. These improvements are designed to enhance the college’s estate and deliver state-of-the-art resources for engineering education. The project supports Riverside College’s strategy to strengthen workforce training in engineering, technology and green energy, working in close collaboration with local industry partners.
Our role in the project:
As part of the new Engineering Block development at Riverside College, we will be installing a high-performance Bauder Total Roof System to the plant deck. Here at Enviroply Roofing, our work will ensure the roof is fully weatherproof, thermally efficient, and compliant with the latest industry standards, providing long-term durability and safety.
Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL)
We will begin with the AVCL, which will prevent condensation and protect the integrity of the roof system. This will involve the installation of Bauder VB4-Expal, a torch-applied SBS elastomeric bitumen membrane with an aluminium foil lining to prevent vapour permeation. In any areas designated as ‘Safe to Torch’, we will use BauderTEC KSD Mica, a self-adhesive alternative, ensuring full compliance with Safe2Torch guidelines.
Insulation
To achieve the required thermal performance and introduce drainage falls, we will install a BauderPIR FA tapered insulation scheme. This highly efficient, foil-faced insulation will create the correct roof falls for effective water runoff while reducing thermal bridging. Insulation will also be applied to vertical upstands to maintain a continuous thermal envelope and minimise heat loss.
Waterproofing membranes
Next, we will install the primary waterproofing system using a two-layer reinforced bitumen membrane. The underlayer, BauderTEC KSA Duo, will be self-adhesive, ensuring a secure bond and reducing the risk of trapped moisture. The top layer will be the Bauder K5K capping sheet, torch-applied to deliver a durable, weather-resistant finish in a charcoal grey mineral surface.
Detailing and accessories
Our team will complete all perimeter and upstand detailing using the Bauder system components to ensure a fully watertight installation. This will include fitting Bauder drainage outlets, parapet emergency overflows, and GRP edge trims as specified. We will also install a Bauder FSM600 protection fleece over the finished waterproofing, protecting the system from damage during future works. All detailing will follow Bauder’s technical guidelines and incorporate torch-free methods where required.
