About the project:
The new Millom Activity and Leisure Centre will form a modern hub for the community, providing a swimming pool, sports hall, fitness studios and gym alongside dedicated space for health and wellbeing services. Located on the Millom School campus, the centre has been designed to be fully accessible and inclusive, encouraging participation from people of all ages and abilities.
Delivered as part of the Millom Town Deal, and supported by local and national funding partners, the project aims to improve community health, boost the local economy, and create a long-term sustainable facility for residents and visitors alike.
Our role in the project:
As part of the construction of the Millom Activity Centre, our team will be responsible for delivering a series of high-performance Protan roofing systems across multiple areas of the building.
Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL)
We will be installing the Protan self-adhesive bituminous vapour control layer across all roof areas. This will provide a secure barrier to prevent moisture ingress and condensation, ensuring the integrity of the insulation and roofing build-up over the lifetime of the system.
Insulation
The project will make use of Kingspan PIR insulation boards at 180mm thickness, selected to achieve the best possible thermal performance.
On Roof A, Roof B (R1, R2, R4), and Canopy A (R3), we will install Kingspan T26 boards with Rubbertech R10 acoustic layer.
On Roof B (R5) and Roof B (R6), we will install Kingspan T27 boards with Rubbertech R10 acoustic layer. This will be fully adhered to suit the aluminium deck substrate.
Single Ply Membrane
A combination of Protan SE and Protan EX-A single ply membranes in dark grey will be installed to complete the roofing build ups, depending on the roof zone:
Protan SE membrane will be used on Roof A, Roof B (R1, R2, R4), Canopy A (R3), and Canopy B (R7). On Canopy B, an additional F2B polypropylene fleece will also be included in the build-up.
Protan EX-A fleece-backed membrane will be installed on Roof B (R5 and R6), providing a robust fully adhered system suited to the aluminium deck substrates.
Detailing and Finishing Touches
As part of the works, additional detailing will be included to ensure both the performance and usability of the completed roofing systems.
Surface protection and walkways- Where required, we will be installing Protan GT2.4 membrane walkways with a slip-resistant textured surface. These will be supplied in a contrasting colour to the main roof membrane, providing both durability and safe access routes for future roof maintenance.
Perimeter trims and edge details- All roof perimeters, upstands, kerbs, drips, and edge details will be finished with Protan laminated metal flashings. These will be mechanically secured to the roof structure and welded to the main membrane to ensure a continuous, watertight seal and a high-quality finish across all roof areas.
