About the project:

The Lancaster University School of Mathematics is a new building to be created close to Preston’s City Centre and Cardinal Newman College, and will provide world class resources, and teaching for 16–18-year-olds in all areas of mathematics. The building externally will be created as a striking feature, with unique architecture, including bronze metal cladding and glass, to add a noticeable landmark to Preston’s City Centre. In addition, there will also be a rooftop terraced area for students to enjoy.

Internally, the four storey building will have a number of standout additions including a retractable 400 seat auditorium, and a three-storey atrium.

Our role in the project at the Lancaster University School of Mathematics:

Our team at Enviroply Roofing will be installing the roofing system for the LUSOM development. This will be a hot melt roofing system involving a surface finish. The design of the roof will involve flat areas as well as parapets and upstands.

As part of this project, we will be installing the SikaBit PRO SA-730 Waterproofing Underlay. This is a roof waterproofing membrane designed to work as a protective underlay for either self-adhesive or hot melt roof systems.

We will also be installing a water infiltration reduction layer. This is specifically designed to provide a high resistance to the passage of water, increasing the overall thermal performance of the roof.

In addition, we will be installing the SikaBit Hot Melt 50/70 Waterproofing for the embedment coat and topcoat. This is one of the industry leading products for hot melt roofing and can provide a range of benefits for the LUSOM project, including having a high bond strength, good tensile strength, and being completely impact resistant. This is also fast setting and becomes resistant to rain, snow, and frost immediately after application.

The hot melt system will also include an insulation layer, for which we will be installing the Sikatherm EPX N 300 R Insulation. Designed to offer minimal thermal conductivity as well as minimal water absorption and high compressive strength, this is a great option for any hot melt roofing project. It is also able to withstand freeze and thaw cycles with ease.

We will also be installing the SikaBit Roof Access Layer. This is a buried access layer that provides robust surface protection.

The roofing system will be completed with paving slabs.
