About the project

Adjacent to the Leeds Liverpool canal, the development at Spring Street has transformed former land on the Bridgefield and Britannia Mill site into 59 new and affordable homes. These consist of 35 houses and 24 apartments which all have affordable costs. Situated in the heart of historic Rishton, and surrounded by countryside, these homes are close to a number of convenient amenities and well-regarded schools, as well as transport links to Blackburn, Burnley, and Manchester.

The system

For this development we were responsible for installing the new roofing system for the apartment block. We used the lead grey, Single Ply, Warm Roofing system which we Mechanically Fastened into position.

For the first stage of the roofing system, we installed the Vapour Control Layer, which is specifically selected to meet the humidity requirements and classifications of the project. As such the Sarnavap 5000E Self-Adhesive Membrane was chosen. This was Adhered directly to the surface of the new roof deck and installed in line with manufacturer’s requirements, continuously sealing all side laps. The Sarnavap 5000E offers a top quality, non-decaying, flexible option for the VCL, as well as offering a high level of water vapour resistance which is perfect for this project.

Once the VCL was fully installed we then installed the Insulation Layer. Imperative for increasing the thermal efficiency of the property, we selected the Sikatherm PIR AL Insulation Boards. As these are faced on both sides with aluminum foil, they offer a minimal level of thermal conductivity and also a high level of strength for longevity and durability. These boards were installed in a staggered bond pattern in line with the manufacturer’s guidelines.

For the final stage of the roof system we installed a Sika Sarnafil S327-15EL Single Ply Membrane in Lead Grey. This membrane option has a proven performance and is designed to last a long time. Made from high quality polyester reinforced polyvinyl chloride (PVC), this membrane will provide a high level of UV resistance and flame retardant, as well as being fully weatherproof. The membrane was Mechanically Fixed into place for maximum security and longevity.

The result

Once the roof was fully complete, a field inspection was carried out and confirmed that all works had been completed to a high standard. The inspector noting the work around the perimeter trims to have good, correct detail and no movement. The roof met the standards set for a high guarantee.
