About the Project

As one of the oldest mosques in Blackburn, Masjid E Rizwan Mosque underwent a significant rebuild and extension to better serve the local community. The redevelopment increased capacity to accommodate up to 450 worshippers at any one time and included dedicated worship spaces for both men and women.

The new facilities also incorporated improved washing areas, funeral preparation facilities, an IT room and library, storage space, and office accommodation. Having been an integral part of the community since the 1970s, the redevelopment delivered much-needed additional space along with an attractive exterior that complements the surrounding Furthergate area, which has also benefited from recent regeneration.

Roofing System Specification

As part of this project, our team at Enviroply Roofing successfully installed a high-performance Sikaplan single ply roofing system, delivering a durable, energy-efficient and long-lasting waterproofing solution for this important community building.

The roofing system installed at Masjid E Rizwan Mosque comprised a mechanically fixed Sikaplan single ply system, designed to provide long-term waterproofing performance, durability, and compliance with current industry standards for public buildings.

The system was installed over a concrete deck and designed in accordance with site-specific wind load calculations, supported by on-site pull-out testing to confirm fastener performance and ensure long-term resistance to wind uplift.

The completed roofing build-up achieves a U-value of 0.18 W/m²K, contributing to improved thermal efficiency and reduced energy consumption for the building.

Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL)

We began with the application of an Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL), designed to prevent the movement of water vapour through the roof deck and protect the structure from condensation and moisture build-up.

For this project, Sarnavap® 500E was installed. This flame-retarded AVCL offers excellent durability, flexibility, and a high level of water vapour resistance. The system was designed to suit a Humidity Class 3 environment in accordance with BS 5250, ensuring effective moisture management within the building.

Insulation Installation

Following the AVCL, tapered Sikatherm® PIR GT insulation boards were installed to achieve the required thermal performance. These insulation boards are faced on both sides with coated glass tissue, maximising thermal efficiency while providing enhanced strength and durability.

A 1:60 tapered insulation layout was incorporated to promote effective rainwater run-off across the flat roof areas. In addition to aiding drainage, the insulation helps maintain comfortable internal temperatures throughout the year while reducing heating and energy costs.

Single Ply Waterproofing Membrane

The project was completed with the installation of the Sikaplan® G 1.8mm Lead Grey single ply waterproofing membrane. This polyester-reinforced PVC membrane incorporates multiple layers containing ultraviolet stabilisers and flame retardants, providing excellent resistance to UV exposure, wind uplift, and common environmental influences.

The membrane was mechanically fixed in accordance with site-specific fastening calculations, delivering robust, long-lasting protection for the entire roofing system. The installed system also meets BROOF(T4) fire classification in accordance with EN 13501-5, making it suitable for use on public buildings.

Detailing and Finishing Works

All detailing works were carried out in accordance with Sika Roofing standard details and project-specific requirements. This included secure detailing at roof perimeters, penetrations, and abutments to ensure full system continuity and long-term watertight performance.

Compatible Sika Roofing accessories were used throughout to ensure fully weldable connections and system integrity. Particular care was taken around roof penetrations and edge details to accommodate movement, manage water flow, and maintain the performance of the waterproofing membrane over time.

Guarantee and Quality Assurance

Everyone involved was pleased with the project outcome. The completed roofing system is covered by a 20-year Sika Roofing Performance Guarantee, providing reassurance on materials, system compatibility, and long-term waterproofing performance. The guarantee is supported by Sika’s product and design expertise and delivered in partnership with an approved and trained installing contractor.
