About the project:

The EZ Sports Facility, also known as the Common Edge Community Sports Village, is located within the Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone. This is a state of the art sports facility that opened in 2023 following a £6 million investment. This development serves as a hub for sports enthusiasts in the region, offering a wide range of amenities to cater to various sporting interests. This features:

  • Football pitches- The site includes 14 grass football pitches, featuring seven full size 11-a-side pitches, five smaller seven a side pitches, and two nine a side pitches. Additionally, there is a full sized, floodlit 3G all weather pitch, ensuring year round play.
  • Rugby pitch- The facility also includes a grass rugby pitch with floodlights and a separate training area, allowing for both daytime and evening training sessions.
  • Sports pavilion- A central sports pavilion provides six spacious changing rooms, two rooms for match officials, two fully equipped kitchens, and a large community space. This pavilion acts as the heart of the village, offering essential facilities for players, coaches, and visitors.
  • Parking and accessibility- A 194 space car park with sustainable drainage has been built, along with a new access road connecting Common Edge Road to Amy Johnson Way. These upgrades have made the facility more accessible and convenient for users.

Our role in the EZ Sports Facility project:

Here at Enviroply Roofing, we installed a mechanically fixed, IKO Armourplan roofing system for the EZ Sports Facility. The project began on 14/02/2022.

We began this project with the installation of the Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL). This layer is designed specifically to prevent condensation build up, reduce the flow of moisture into and through the roof, and make sure that issues with rotting and decomposition do not occur. As a result, the IKO Spectravap PE was installed. As a high performance AVCL option, this will provide significant moisture protection and control while also being a long lasting and durable choice. We loosely laid the Spectravap PE vapour control layer, sealing all edges and overlaps with Spectravap Jointing Tape at the side and end laps, as well as the edges around upstands and kerbs.

The next stage of the installation involved fitting the insulation, a key element for ensuring the building’s thermal efficiency. By reducing the amount of heat lost through the expansive roof space, the insulation will play a vital role in maintaining energy efficiency. For the EZ Sports Facility, Enertherm GOLD PIR Insulation was selected due to its exceptional performance. This insulation board features seven integrated layers that work together to maximise thermal efficiency. Its multi-layer, gastight aluminium cladding on both sides further enhances its insulating properties, for remarkable results. Compared to other PIR options, Enertherm GOLD PIR Insulation offers greater stability, thanks to its increased compression strength and lower lambda values. This allows for superior thermal performance while requiring less insulation overall.

To complete the roofing system, the IKO Armourplan P Single Ply Membrane was installed. Positioned above both the insulation and vapour control layer, this membrane provides essential waterproofing, protecting the roof from weather conditions and potential damage from the elements. In addition to its practical function, this also delivers a high quality visual finish. Known for their outstanding durability, IKO Armourplan P membranes offer excellent UV stability, increased tensile strength, and superior overall performance. The membrane was mechanically fixed into place, finalising the roofing installation for the EZ Sports Facility.

The result:

We completed the roofing system for the EZ Sports Facility on 07/09/2022. The project went well, with everyone involved happy with the results, and the standards for the 20-year guarantee were achieved.
