About the Project at Burnley College Industry Hub North Campus

This exciting new Industry Hub was developed as part of Burnley College’s continued investment in its North Campus. Designed by ABW Architects, the project created new teaching and training facilities alongside landscaped sports and recreation areas. The aim was to create a modern environment that promotes learning, collaboration, and wellbeing, while strengthening links between education and local industry.

Our Involvement

Here at Enviroply Roofing, we were proud to once again collaborate with John Turner Construction, delivering a complete single-ply roofing package for the new Industry Hub at Burnley College’s North Campus.

Working closely with Sika Limited, we installed a mechanically fixed Sikaplan G roofing system designed for long-term performance and resilience. The system design was fully verified by Sika Technical Services, including detailed wind-uplift calculations to BS EN 1991-1-4 standards. The resulting specification provided excellent resistance across both central and perimeter roof zones, ensuring the system’s durability even in challenging weather conditions.

Roof Build-Up and Installation

Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL)

The installation began with the S-Vap 500 E air and vapour control layer. This robust, flame-retarded polyethylene membrane provides excellent vapour resistance and airtightness across the roof structure. All side and end laps were securely sealed to maintain continuity of the barrier, ensuring effective protection against moisture ingress and condensation within the roof build-up.

Insulation

Next, the team installed Sikatherm® PIR AL insulation, a high-performance rigid PIR board with a U-value of 0.10 W/m²K. The boards were mechanically fastened in a staggered bond pattern to enhance load distribution and thermal efficiency. This layer contributes significantly to the overall energy performance of the building, helping reduce heat loss and improving comfort levels within the teaching spaces below.

Waterproofing Membrane

To complete the roof build-up, a Sikaplan G-18 light-grey waterproofing membrane was installed. This polyester-reinforced, multi-layer PVC membrane delivers outstanding UV stability, flexibility, and mechanical strength. The membrane was lap-fixed and mechanically fastened using thermally broken fasteners, providing superior wind-uplift resistance and long-term durability suited to the site’s exposed conditions.

Detailing and Finishing

All detailing was carried out in accordance with Sika’s standard technical specifications, ensuring a seamless and watertight finish. Precision heat welding was used to join laps and corners, delivering a clean, professional result designed for longevity and minimal maintenance.

Sustainability and Compliance

Sika’s roofing systems are certified to ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standards, supporting the college’s commitment to sustainability. The system specification also aligned with BREEAM performance objectives, offering proven lifecycle durability and a reduced environmental footprint.

The project was completed in accordance with CDM Regulations, with all roofing works delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards of quality.

Project Outcome at Burnley College Industry Hub North Campus

The finished roofing system provided Burnley College’s new Industry Hub with a robust, energy-efficient, and visually clean solution. The work was created to a high standard, achieving a 25-year guarantee, and outstanding performance characteristics.
