About the project:

Cronton Sixth Form College is set to benefit from a significant new development, with the creation of a purpose-built two-storey Teaching Block alongside a dedicated Music Hub. This modern facility will replace temporary cabin classrooms, providing six new teaching spaces, ICT and laboratory areas, and staff support rooms, all centred around a landscaped courtyard.
The Music Hub will introduce specialist rehearsal and practice rooms designed to support both the college’s music curriculum and extracurricular activities. With sound-treated spaces and high-quality facilities, the new building will give students access to a professional environment tailored to performance and creative learning.

Our Role in the Project:

For the redevelopment works at Cronton Sixth Form College, we will be delivering high-performance Bauder felt roofing systems solutions across multiple roof areas for the new Teaching Block and Music Hub.

Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL)

To protect the building from moisture damage, every roof will start with the installation of a Bauder air and vapour control layer. This layer acts as a barrier, stopping warm air and moisture from reaching the insulation and causing condensation. On this project, we will be using Bauder Super AL-E, a torch-applied bitumen membrane reinforced with aluminium foil, and BauderTEC KSD self-adhesive membranes in areas where a torch-free method is required. Together, these products will create a strong, reliable base that safeguards the structure and helps the roof perform effectively for the long term.

Insulation

We will be installing Bauder FA G16 tapered insulation across all roof areas. This lightweight, rigid PIR board is foil-faced and carries a Green Guide rating of “A”. Designed to create effective drainage falls, it will prevent ponding on the roof surface and provide consistent thermal performance across the system. The tapered insulation will be tailored to each roof layout, ensuring that the insulation not only delivers the required U-values but also reduces thermal bridging at critical junctions.

Waterproofing Membrane

The waterproofing will be completed using the Bauder Total Roof System, which is a built-up reinforced bituminous solution. This includes a BauderTEC KSA Duo underlayer, a self-adhesive elastomeric bitumen sheet with innovative “DUO” lap technology for secure jointing, and a Bauder K5K capping sheet. The capping sheet is a heavy-duty, polyester-reinforced, torch-applied membrane with a mineral finish in charcoal grey. Together, these components will deliver a resilient, weather-tight finish that is resistant to fire and UV degradation while providing a clean, professional appearance for the Cronton Sixth Form development.

Detailing and Accessories

We will ensure all roof details are completed to the highest standard using the full range of compatible Bauder accessories. Pre-formed PIR angle fillets will be installed at upstands to maintain membrane integrity, while proprietary Bauder rainwater outlets will provide efficient drainage. Where required, GRP edge trims and lightning conductor clips will be fitted to ensure a seamless and practical finish. Each element will be installed in line with Bauder’s guidance, guaranteeing a robust, watertight system in every area.

Once complete, the roofing works will deliver durable, energy-efficient, and fully guaranteed systems to support the long-term performance of Cronton Sixth Form College’s new teaching and music facilities.
