About the Project:

Due to increased parking pressures at the hospital, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) secured approval to construct a new multi-storey car park (MSCP).
The completed development has significantly improved parking provision at the infirmary, delivering 356 spaces within the MSCP for patients and visitors, alongside 64 additional surface-level spaces for staff.

Our Role in the Project

Here at Enviroply Roofing, we successfully installed multiple high-performance IKO Armourplan roofing systems as part of the Wigan NHS development. Each roof area was completed using a consistent specification and build-up, ensuring uniform performance, durability, and compliance across the project. All works were carried out in line with IKO guidelines, British Standards, and Building Regulations, resulting in a secure, watertight, and free-draining roofing system.

Air and Vapour Control Layer

To protect the structure from moisture ingress and control condensation risk, the IKO Spectravap PE Air and Vapour Control Layer (AVCL) was installed. This was loosely laid and sealed at all side and head laps using Spectravap Jointing Tape to create a continuous vapour barrier.
Particular care was taken around penetrations and upstands, ensuring all areas were fully sealed to maintain system integrity. This layer now plays a critical role in preventing interstitial condensation and safeguarding the long-term performance of the roofing system.

Insulation

An IKO Enertherm tapered PIR insulation scheme was installed to achieve the required falls for effective drainage in accordance with BS 6229. The insulation boards were mechanically fixed to the substrate, providing a stable and durable foundation for the waterproofing system.
The tapered design ensured efficient water runoff across all roof areas, eliminating the risk of ponding. All boards were closely butted, maintaining thermal continuity and minimising cold bridging.

Waterproofing Membrane

The waterproofing layer was completed using the IKO Armourplan PSG membrane, a high-performance PVC system known for its durability and long service life. The membrane was adhered using Spectrabond Low Foaming PU Adhesive to ensure a strong and consistent bond to the insulation layer.
All laps and detailing were hot-air welded, forming a continuous and watertight finish across each roof area. The completed system delivers excellent weather resistance and complies with fire performance requirements under Building Regulations Part B .

Finishing and Detailing

All perimeter details, upstands, and penetrations were completed using IKO Armourplan accessories and preformed trims, providing a clean, secure, and durable finish.
Maintenance walkways were installed where required using Armourplan Walkway Membrane, ensuring safe and controlled access for future inspection and maintenance.

Project Outcome at Wigan NHS MSCP

The roofing works at Wigan NHS MSCP were completed to a high standard, delivering reliable waterproofing and long-term performance across all roof areas. By installing the IKO Armourplan PSG single-ply system throughout, the project achieved a consistent and durable roofing solution suited to the operational demands of a busy healthcare environment.
The completed installation provides a robust, BBA-certified waterproofing system, designed to ensure the roofs remain secure, weathertight, and free-draining throughout their lifespan .
All works were carried out in accordance with IKO specifications and were subject to inspection and final sign-off by an IKO Technical Engineer, enabling the project to achieve a 20-year IKO system guarantee. This ensures long-term assurance for the client and supports the ongoing performance requirements of the new multi-storey car park.
