About the project:
The Countess of Chester Health Park is set to benefit from a new £3.5 million Urgent Response Centre, designed to extend the existing Upton Lea mental health facility. The unit will feature purpose-built therapeutic assessment rooms alongside a dedicated Section 136 “place of safety.”
Due for completion in early 2026, the development will transform access to urgent mental health care by providing an alternative to A&E. Bringing crisis services together under one roof, it will ease pressure on emergency departments while offering a calmer, more supportive environment for those in need.
Our role in the project:
For the Urgent response Centre at the Countess of Chester Hospital, our team will deliver a high-performance Sikaplan roofing solution that provides long-term protection, meets strict healthcare sector requirements, and is backed by a 25-year guarantee. This system will follow the same roofing build up, using the same materials and system for the main roof, link roof, and the reception extension roof.
Air and Vapour Control Layer
We will begin by preparing the new plywood substrate and priming it with SikaRoof® Primer-610. This is a spray-applied primer designed to ensure maximum adhesion. A S-Vap 5000E SA self-adhesive, reinforced bituminous air and vapour control layer will then be installed. This foil-faced layer will provide an airtight seal across the roof areas and act as a reliable barrier against condensation and moisture ingress.
Insulation
To meet the specified thermal performance of 0.16 W/m²K, we will install Sikatherm® MW tapered stone wool insulation. Manufactured to BS EN 13162 standards, this dual-density, non-combustible insulation offers excellent compressive strength and fire resistance. The boards will be laid in a staggered bond pattern and bonded using SikaRoof® C-300 adhesive. This is a high-performance polyurethane adhesive that ensures secure attachment even under varying atmospheric conditions.
Waterproof Membrane
The roof areas will be fully waterproofed with Sikaplan® SGK-18 in lead grey. This fleece-backed, multi-layer PVC single ply membrane is reinforced with glass non-woven to enhance dimensional stability. It will be adhered using SikaRoof® 500 adhesive, creating a strong bond that resists uplift pressures and provides long-term durability against weathering, UV radiation, and mechanical stresses.
Detailing
We will carry out careful detailing to upstands, penetrations and perimeters, using Sikaplan® SG-15 and G-15 coverstrips where necessary. S-Peelstops with stainless steel fasteners will be installed at critical points to secure the membrane. Drainage outlets will be renewed with SikaRoof® Drain systems, which are fully compatible with the membrane to ensure a welded, watertight seal. To promote safe access and protect the roof surface, Sikaplan® Walkway-20 tiles will be installed along designated maintenance routes.
Quality and Compliance
Upon completion, the roofing system will be fully covered by the Sika 25-Year Performance Plus Guarantee, supported by both Sika Limited and ourselves as the certified contractor. This will provide complete peace of mind for the client, with assurance that both materials and workmanship are fully protected.
