About the project:
The development at Cole Street in Birkenhead will see the transformation of a historic school building, originally built in the 1920s, into 47 apartments in the heart of Wirral. The development aims to blend preserved historic features with contemporary architecture, creating a mix of converted and newly built residences that offer a range of garden, terrace, and balcony options. Many upper floor apartments are designed to boast views across the Liverpool skyline.
Situated directly opposite Birkenhead Park, the location of this development provides excellent access to schools, shops, leisure facilities, public transport, and Liverpool City Centre. All of this makes these new properties appealing for both commuters and suburban homeowners
Our role in the project:
As the leading roofing experts in the North West, we will be installing two Protan roofing systems for Roof A and Roof B at the Cole Street development. Each roofing system will involve the same build up and materials.
The installation will begin with the lower protection layer, that will be loosely laid directly onto the substrate deck. This protection layer will be the F2B Polypropylene fleece which is designed to enhance adhesion and protect the underlying surfaces. This is a highly effective option for improving durability, accommodating movement, and adding cushioning. Overall, the F2B Polypropylene fleece can prevent punctures and improve wind uplift performance for a long lasting roofing system.
On top of the lower protection layer, we will then install the waterproof membrane. For the Cole Street development, we will be using Protan SE membrane. This is a reinforced, flexible PVC membrane with a textured, slip resistant surface, that can deliver exceptional performance for unmatched reliability and long lasting durability.
Key design feature for the Cole Street development
To complete the roofing works, Protan Omega standing-seam profiles will be installed. These will provide the appearance of traditional metal standing seams while retaining the performance advantages of the Protan single-ply system.
The seams will have a zinc-effect finish and will create a consistent and uniform pattern across the roof area. This approach is designed to enhance the overall appearance of the building and complement the development’s combination of preserved historic elements and contemporary design.
The standing-seam detail will contribute to a high-quality, durable roofing solution with an improved visual finish that meets the architectural requirements of the project.
