The role of PPE in the roofing industry

The role of PPE in the roofing industry

As one of the most hazardous sectors in the construction field, working as a roofer can be dangerous. From the potential of exposure to harmful substances to the risk of falling from heights, and potential injury from tools and equipment, there are a number of factors that can go wrong. This is why Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is so important. This plays a crucial role in reducing these risks and helping to ensure the safety of roofers. As a result, adherence to PPE regulations is a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. But what is the role of PPE in roofing safety? And what types of PPE can make the most difference?

So what is the role of PPE in the roofing industry?

Roofing work is inherently risky, and these risks cannot always be effectively mitigated by safety measures like scaffolding or guardrails. This is where PPE comes into play, as a last line of defence against potential injuries, when other safety measures fall short. PPE therefore plays an important role in reducing risks to roofers and reducing the chance from severe harm or fatalities.

In 2023/24, falls from height accounted for 50 fatalities in the UK construction industry, making it the second most common cause of death in this sector, behind being hit by a vehicle. This is why proper PPE is so important. This can significantly reduce the number of fatalities and injuries for roofers, when used appropriately.

PPE also has the benefits of helping workers in the roofing industry feel safe and secure when carrying out the work they are so talented at. This can improve focus and efficiency while working.

What are the essential types of PPE for roofing?

The types of PPE required for roofers vary depending on the specific tasks and conditions they will be working in. Some of the key types of PPE used in the roofing industry include:

  • Safety helmets- Safety helmets protect workers from head injuries caused by falling tools, materials, or debris. A properly fitted helmet with a chin strap ensures it remains secure, even in windy conditions or during movement.
  • Fall protection and fall arrest systems- these systems are essential PPE for roofers and can include:
    • Harnesses- These secure workers to anchor points, preventing them from falling off the roof.
    • Safety nets- Positioned below roof levels, safety nets reduce the impact of a fall.
Temporary edge protection- While not PPE in itself, this works in conjunction with harnesses to provide a safer working environment.
  • Safety footwear- Losing grip on a roof and slipping can be fatal, and so it is essential that roofers wear safety boots with non-slip soles to ensure stability on sloped or wet surfaces. Protective toe caps are also important for preventing injuries from heavy falling objects. This footwear should also have puncture-resistant soles, which can protect against nails or sharp debris.
  • Gloves- Gloves are essential for protecting hands from cuts, abrasions, and chemical exposure. They should provide a good grip, especially when handling tools or materials at height. Flexible and durable gloves enhance dexterity, making it easier to perform precise tasks.
  • Eye Protection- Goggles or safety glasses shield the eyes from dust, flying debris, or splinters generated during cutting or drilling. They also protect against UV rays, which can be intensified by reflective roof surfaces. This can reduce injuries and risks when installing roofs.
  • Hearing protection- Roofing can involve the use of loud equipment, such as nail guns or power saws, and overexposure to these high noise levels can lead to permanent hearing damage. As a result, earplugs or earmuffs can be worn to reduce noise exposure, ensuring roofers maintain their hearing health.
  • Respiratory protection- some roofing installations will involve working with insulation or chemicals and this can be harmful to breath in. As such, respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is essential. Masks or respirators can prevent harmful dust, fumes, or airborne particles from being inhaled, reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses.
  • High visibility clothing- Roofers working on construction sites or near roadways must wear high visibility clothing to ensure they are easily seen by machinery operators or passing vehicles, particularly in low light conditions.
