IKO Hot Melt Roofing for Long-Term Flat Roof Waterproofing

IKO Hot Melt Roofing for Long-Term Flat Roof Waterproofing
IKO hot melt roofing systems provide a durable and highly robust waterproofing solution for commercial and industrial buildings, particularly where an inverted roof, podium deck, green roof or other protected waterproofing application is required.

At Enviroply Roofing, we install specialist hot melt waterproofing systems for commercial and industrial projects across the North West. Working with IKO systems, we can provide a complete roofing solution designed around the requirements of the building, roof construction and intended use.

What is Hot Melt Roofing?

Hot melt roofing is a seamless waterproofing system formed from hot-applied rubber-modified bitumen.

Unlike traditional exposed roofing membranes, hot melt waterproofing is generally installed beneath a protective build-up. This makes it particularly suitable for inverted roofs and applications where the waterproofing layer will be covered by insulation, paving, landscaping or other finishes.

Once installed, the hot melt material forms a continuous waterproofing layer, helping to protect the building structure from water ingress.

The Permatec LI range also offers a lower-carbon option, with IKO stating that it provides over 50% lower embodied carbon compared with the previous formulation.

Where is Hot Melt Roofing Used?

Hot melt waterproofing can be particularly suitable where the waterproofing layer is protected by another roof finish or build-up.

Typical applications include:

Inverted Roofs

Hot melt is well suited to inverted roof construction, where the waterproofing is installed below the insulation.

Podium Decks

The robust nature of hot melt waterproofing makes it suitable for podium and amenity areas where the waterproofing must sit beneath paving, landscaping or other finishes.

Green Roofs

Hot melt systems can form part of green roof constructions, including systems where additional protection against root penetration is required.

Protected Waterproofing Applications

Where the waterproofing membrane will be buried beneath insulation, finishes or other materials, hot melt provides a durable and continuous waterproofing layer protected from direct exposure to the elements.

Benefits of IKO Hot Melt Roofing

IKO hot melt systems are designed to provide long-term waterproofing performance. IKO states that its hot melt systems have a design life linked to the design life of the building, with guarantees available for up to 25 years depending on the system and specification.

The high tensile strength of the system provides a tough waterproofing layer with a high resistance to impact damage.

Hot melt systems retain flexibility at low temperatures, making them suitable for use during colder periods and helping to reduce delays caused by winter conditions.

The system is particularly suited to inverted roofs, where the waterproofing layer is protected beneath the insulation and finished roof build-up.

Hot melt can be incorporated into a variety of protected waterproofing constructions, including podium decks, green roofs and other applications where a robust waterproofing layer is required.

IKO’s newer Permatec LI systems have been developed with sustainability in mind. IKO states that the Permatec LI range delivers over 50% lower embodied carbon, while maintaining long-lasting waterproofing performance.

The range includes anti-root, inverted roof, protected inverted roof and uninsulated podium systems, allowing the specification to be selected according to the requirements of the project.

Hot melt waterproofing requires careful preparation, correct application and attention to detail to achieve a reliable finished system.
