We are proud to announce that Enviroply Roofing has pledged our support for the NFRC’s Safe2Torch campaign.
As a specialist roofing contractor, health and safety is at the heart of everything we do. Roofing projects can involve a range of specialist materials, systems and working practices, and where gas torches are used, it is essential that the risks are properly understood and managed. By supporting the Safe2Torch campaign, we are reinforcing our commitment to safer working practices and helping to reduce the risk of roof fires associated with the use of gas torches.
What Is Safe2Torch?
Safe2Torch is an NFRC campaign developed in partnership with contractor and manufacturer members to significantly reduce the risk of roof fires when gas torches are used.
Gas torches can be used for a variety of roofing applications, including drying out roofs and installing torch-on membranes. While they remain an important tool for certain roofing systems and applications, their use also requires careful planning and effective control measures.
The Safe2Torch campaign promotes a safety-first approach, with an emphasis on identifying potential fire risks before work begins and ensuring that the appropriate working methods are in place. The guidance highlights the importance of identifying fire risks at the survey and specification stage, with specifications defaulting to torch-free solutions where a risk cannot be ruled out.
Why Is Safe2Torch Important?
Roof fires caused by gas torches can pose a serious risk to people, property and projects. For roofing contractors, effective planning and risk management are therefore essential whenever hot works are being considered.
Safe2Torch encourages the industry to take responsibility for identifying and managing potential fire risks. It promotes safer specifications and working practices while providing clients with additional confidence that roofing works are being planned with these risks in mind.
For us, pledging our support is another way of demonstrating our commitment to maintaining high standards across every stage of a roofing project.
Our Safe2Torch Commitment
By pledging our support for the Safe2Torch campaign, Enviroply Roofing has committed to a number of important principles.
We commit to:
- Highlighting and reporting specifications which do not conform to Safe2Torch.
- Identifying and reducing the risk of roof fires caused by gas torches.
- Ensuring all employees are trained in the use of gas torches and their associated risks.
- Ensuring all supervisors or charge hands have completed the Safe2Torch checklist prior to hot works commencing.
These commitments help ensure that safety is considered before hot works begin and remains a key focus throughout the project.
Putting Safety First at the Planning Stage
One of the key messages behind Safe2Torch is that potential fire risks should be identified as early as possible.
The NFRC guidance emphasises the importance of identifying fire risks during the survey stage and factoring those risks into the specification. Where a fire risk has been identified, or where it cannot be ruled out, the relevant areas should default to torch-free solutions unless it can subsequently be demonstrated that torch application is safe and agreed by all relevant parties.
This approach reflects our own commitment to careful planning and responsible project delivery. Before work begins, we believe it is important to understand the site, the roofing system, the specification and any risks associated with the proposed working methods.
Training and Awareness
Having the right procedures in place is essential, but they must also be supported by properly trained and competent employees.
As part of our Safe2Torch commitment, we will ensure that employees involved in the use of gas torches are trained in their use and understand the risks associated with hot works.
We also recognise the importance of supervision on site. That’s why, before hot works commence, our supervisors or charge hands will complete the Safe2Torch checklist to help ensure that the appropriate safety considerations have been addressed.
The Safe2Torch pledge specifically includes these commitments to employee training and the completion of the checklist before hot works begin.
Specialist Roofing and Waterproofing Expertise
Our work covers a range of specialist roofing and waterproofing systems, including single-ply roofing and hot-melt waterproofing.
We also work with leading manufacturers and systems, including Sika, Bauder and Protan.
Every roofing system has its own installation requirements, specifications and potential risks. Our role as a specialist roofing contractor is to install high quality roofing systems, while ensuring that the work is carefully planned and carried out using appropriate methods.
Where hot works are required, Safe2Torch provides an important framework for helping manage the risks associated with the use of gas torches.
Looking Forward
At Enviroply Roofing, we are committed to continually developing our working practices and maintaining high standards across every aspect of our business. Pledging our support for the NFRC Safe2Torch campaign is an important part of that commitment.
By identifying potential risks, supporting safe specifications, investing in employee training and ensuring appropriate checks are completed before hot works commence, we aim to help create a safer environment for our employees, our clients and everyone involved in our roofing projects.
